Essentials for a Long Haul Flight

Sooner or later, we will all experience the highs and lows of a long haul flight. Some people dread them, some people run to get on that plane.

To be honest, I’ve always loved long haul flights. Especially when I’m flying solo. I love switching off; not being able to use my phone, not having to think about what I need to do next, or messages I need to send. Just being able to knuckle down and read a book or watch a film. Plus you never know what conversations you’ll have with the people sitting next to you.

But a long haul flight is just that: long. And there reaches a point where even I am ready to get back on to solid ground.

So if you’re jetting off on a long flight, here’s my list of essential items I take with me on any long haul flight.

No matter where I’m flying from or flying to, I always make sure I have a cosy jumper or hoody with me. It’s comfortable, it’s warm, and I can use it as a pillow if needs be.

Water Bottle

I always take an empty reusable water bottle with me through security, and then fill it up a water fountain in the airport. You can easily get dehydrated on a plane, so make sure you drink lots! And you can ask a member of staff on the plane to refill it for you.

Thick Socks

I hate having cold feet. So I always pack a pair of bed socks in my backpack to keep my toes toasty warm throughout the flight. Its also a comfort thing, if my feet are warm, I’m more likely to get some sleep in during my flight.

Travel Pillow/Ear Plugs/Eye Mask

Basically anything that helps me sleep. I don’t always use my travel pillow or ear plugs, but it’s worth having them. And you can buy them relatively cheaply online or in local drug stores.

My Ipod, phone and book always get stowed away in my backpack ready for my flight. I also make sure I pack all related chargers and headphones. I often listen to music while I try to doze, and sometimes you just can’t watch anymore films.

Aeroplane food isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. And if you happen to sleep through a meal you could end up super hungry. I always pack some nuts, dried fruit and sometimes a little chocolate just to snack on throughout the flight, and make sure I get something inside me.

For me there’s nothing worse than feeling groggy, jet lagged and simply gross. So I take a handy pack of mini toiletries with me on the plane to make me feel more human….

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Lip balm
  • Hand cream
  • Face wipes

Honestly, you will not regret taking a little pouch with you with these things in, they’re a life saver.

Random I know. But on some flights you may have to fill out an arrival card ready for immigration at your destination. And I don’t think I’ve ever been offered a pen alongside it. You never know when you may need it.

Self explanatory really. But make sure you have your passport, visas, tickets, insurance information, and maybe a little cash, just to make sure you’re covered for when you reach your destination. The last thing you want to be doing when you arrive somewhere new is to root through your backpack in a mild panic. I invested in a document wallet from Amazon to keep everything in one place.

Really, whatever you pack is up to you. Some like to pack everything but the kitchen sink. Some like to pack the minimum amount. And that’s fine. Just make sure you have everything you need to arrive in your destination safely and smoothly. And enjoy yourself!
