5 UK Castles You Need to Visit

The UK is famous for it’s castles.

Rich in history, heritage and culture, there’s something just so magical about being able to wander through the halls of a Castle and discovering the secrets of times gone by.

Here are my 5 favourite UK Castles you 100% need to visit on your next UK adventure.

Warwick Castle

Warwick Castle has a long history dating back over 1100 years to the Dane invasion. With dungeons, state rooms and even a maze to explore, you can easily spend a whole day here taking in the phenomenal views.

Along with special events and daily special tours, you can spend time with Birds of Prey or even sit back and watch a trebuchet show with your picnic.

If you’re after a place to stay for the night, Warwick offers Medieval Glamping experiences – staying in Knight’s tents for a real step back in time! It’s an awesome experience I’d highly recommend!

Edinburgh Castle

Ah Edinburgh. One of my favourite cities, and one of my favourite castles too. With breathtaking views of the city centre, Edinburgh is one of the oldest fortresses in Europe teaming with history. Over time it’s been used as a Royal Palace, a prison and a military garrison. A visit here can make you feel just like a Royal! On display in the Crown Room are The Honours of Scotland, the oldest Crown Jewels in Britain dating back to the 15th Century!

Check out their website for more information here.

Cardiff Castle

Located at the very centre of Cardiff, Cardiff Castle has over 2000 years of history waiting to be discovered.

The original fortress was built by the Romans in 1AD and since then has been used as a stronghold by the Romans and Normans, as well as being passed through the hands of many noble families.

It’s such an impressive castle and I always visit whenever I’m in Cardiff visiting friends and family. Even sitting in the grounds with a picnic makes for a great summer day out!

Carrickfergus Castle

We’re over in Northern Ireland now (if you manage to visit all these castles in one visit I applaud you).

Located in Carrickfergus (County Antrim), this castle dates back to the Normans. Since its completion, it has been attacked and besieged multiple times by the Scots, French, Irish and English. On my visit to Northern Ireland I sadly didn’t get chance to fully explore the castle, however its on my list for when I go back!

Due to the current Covid situation, Carrickfergus is closed to the public, however keep an eye on their website for updates!

Bamburgh Castle

If you saw last week’s post, you’ll know I love Bamburgh! A stronghold for the Danes who landed in Northumberland, Bamburgh has a rich history.

With breathtaking views of Northumberland Coastline, and so much ground to visit, you can spend hours on end here, simply getting lost in time! Find out more about Bamburgh on their website, or over on my last post!

  1. I’ve lived in the UK my whole life but never been to any of these (well, I’ve been near Edinburgh Castle but not sure that counts). Will add these to the bucket list!
