Keeping a travel journal is a great way to remember your memories, experiences and conversations from your days on the road. Not only will your travel journal help you to keep all of your experiences fresh in your mind, but it can actually help to enrich your trip in the moment too!
Here are 6 creative ideas to keep your travel journal exciting, fresh and fun!
Who’s the Journal for?
Once you’ve asked yourself this question, you’ll be able get those creative juices flowing. If the journal is just for you (and maybe your close family and friends) to read over when you’re back from your travels, the overall vibe of your journal will be completely different than if it’s for an assignment, work or hey, even a blog. You can use this question to start your travel journal off on the right foot, so you don’t get halfway through your trip and wish you’d designed your pages totally differently!
Collect Unique Things
Keeping stamps, ticket stubs or even receipts is a great way to liven up the pages of your journal. Sticking them alongside your written entries not only helps to jog your memory, but also makes it a lot more fun to look at. I had one friend who loved to connect those loyalty cards you get in coffee shops and stuck them into her journal when she got home – such a simple thing to do but so effective!
Colour, Colour and More Colour
Don’t be a plain Jane and just write in biro the whole time. I mean, sure that’s fine when you’re on the road – I mean, who wants to lug around a load of felt tips when they’re backpacking? But maybe before you go, plan out your pages, draw pictures, page borders, use washi tape or stickers to offset the page – just let your creative side run riot and make your journal your own. When I get home for a trip I always reread what I’ve written in my travel journal and highlight odd words or places that I want to stand out which is a great way to make relatively plain pages stand out.
I mean, they don’t have to be Google Maps worthy. But maybe you visited a national park, a zoo or even a theme park. Why not draw out a rough map of the location and mark out your favourite spots?
Mix Up the Layout
Use mind-maps, sketches, and lists as well as the standard paragraph to record your days on the road! Such a simple way to make your journal look so much more creative without too much effort!
Write Down the Little Details
When I was in New Zealand I did a hop-on, hop-off bus tour. And so we had a few different drivers along the way. One of the things my friend and I did was record the names of our drivers on each route we took, and now 2 years later I’m so glad we did that! I’m one of those people who are way better with names than faces, so it’s so nice to be able to look back on that trip and remember exactly who drove us where. We did the same thing with our accommodation (which is also handy for if someone wants suggestions of places to stay!).
And there you have it, 6 ideas to keep your journal creative and fun – and to hopefully keep you motivated enough to fill in your journal on your next trip!
