Wandering around the World
Welcome to Blogmas Day Six!
With the world still on pause, and Christmas happening in a different way for so many of us this year, it’s meant that many Christmas Markets have been cancelled. But I’m staying hopeful that next year the world will be back to normal, we will be able to travel, and we’ll be able to go back to our favourite Christmas Markets.
So here’s my definitive guide on the Christmas Markets you need to visit next winter.
EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND
Edinburgh at Christmas is incredible. Not only is there a thriving market, but there is so much to do in the city that you can turn your visit into a weekend trip or even longer! Edinburgh’s Christmas runs over six weeks, with a neighbourhood market, activities for kids and plenty of tempting food and drink stalls. Whilst this year the market is running online, I have high hopes that 2021 it will be back in all its glory.
PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC
If you’re in Prague at Christmas time, you can benefit from not one but two Christmas markets – Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. The squares are only a five minute walk from each other, so it’s super easy to explore both of them in one day. You can try some traditional Czech food and drink, see the tree lit when the sun goes down and take in the festive magic. The market is open every day (even on the big day itself), and runs from November 30th to January 6th!
BERLIN, GERMANY
I feel like Berlin is an incredibly popular destination at Christmas time – the city is pretty famous for it’s Christmas Markets. There are so many markets you could visit in the city, that it’s pretty difficult to pick just one – what I love most is that no two markets are the same. If I had to pick two? Gendarmenmarkt and City Hall for sure! Whether mulled wine is your festive treat of choice, or you’re more of a cocoa connoisseur Berlin’s markets have something to suit every need.
NEW YORK, USA
Christmas in New York is always something special. From the lights, to the ice skating rinks and the dozens upon dozens of Christmas trees, a visit to New York is a real festive treat. The majority of New York’s markets take place between the end of November and December, so there’s plenty of time to explore the best the city has to offer. From Union Square Holiday Market, to the Winter Village at Bryant Park, you can check out Xmas Market’s definitive guide for all the New York inspiration you may need.
VIENNA, AUSTRIA
No matter what time of year it is, Vienna is a phenomenal city to visit. And Christmas makes it even more magical. Their first Christmas Market was way back in 1298 – so it’s safe to say they know what they’re doing! With over 150 stalls there is plenty of Christmas goodies to choose from, as well as reindeer experiences, ice rinks and of course, traditional nativity scenes.
TORONTO, CANADA
If I’m being honest, I’d never heard of Toronto’s Christmas Market. But it sounds SO good! Their month long event is inspired by the traditional Christmas Markets found across Europe and brings together local craftsmen, artists and artisanal food-makers. And of course, they have a humongous Christmas Tree, so you can take that insta-perfect selfie!

I’ve never been to a Christmas market and it was on my bucket list for this year but obviously that didn’t happen so guess I’ll have to wait! My dream would be to go to a German Christmas market!

We have Christmas markets in Vancouver Canada too, but not this year or to the extent that the Europeans do. Definitely on a travel bucket list to visit several at some point. Thanks for sharing.
