Three years ago I headed out to visit one of my closest friends in Brisbane, Australia. I loved exploring the city, meeting the locals, and tasting some new food. If you’re thinking of visiting in Brisbane and are in need of some inspiration, here are some of my top free things to do in this dynamic city.
Take the CityHopper across the River – The CityHopper is a free ferry service along the Brisbane River. With six stops between North Quay and Sydney Street, its the perfect way to see Brisbane in a whole new way!

Explore Queensland Museum – one of the things I love most about cities is the fact that the majority of museums are free to enter. The Queensland Museum is free to enter and is Queensland’s centre for history, heritage and science. If you manage to visit Brisbane on a rainy day, this is a great place to spend a drizzly afternoon!
Hike up Mount Coot-Tha – Mount Coot-Tha was one of my favourite places in Brisbane. Offering panoramic views of the city’s skyline, I’d highly recommend visiting for sunrise or sunset – it will take your breath away!
Immerse yourself in the City Botanical Gardens – the Riverside Botanical Gardens are the largest botanical gardens in Brisbane and feature a Bamboo Grove, Riverstage, ornamental features and much more.

Discover the City Centre Heritage Trail – taking you on a journey to discover the events that have shaped Brisbane, the City Centre Heritage Trail features 26 reference points including the ‘Great Fire of Brisbane’ and memorials celebrating the fallen heroes of World War II.
Take a Free Walking Tour – if you’re trying to get your bearings, or fancy learning more about Brisbane’s history and legends, a free walking tour is a must. There are multiple companies you can choose, including Strawberry Tours.
Sunset at Shorncliffe Pier – located at Bramble Bay, Shorncliffe Pier is Brisbane’s largest timber pier stretching over 350m. It’s the perfect place to sit and have a picnic and watch a stunning sunset!

Watching the sunset from the pier sounds like a lovely way to end a day exploring the Botanical Gardens or a day spent in good company. I love finding the places locals recommend when I am seeing a new place; there is no better way to find the secret gems of a city.

I lived in Australia for a semester, but I never made it to Brisbane. It sounds like I need to visit when I return. I love hiking in the mountains and going to botanical gardens.
