This year I’ve been attempting to taste my way around the world, one recipe at a time. And a few weeks ago I was sent an amazing recipe for Swedish Chokladbollar – Swedish Chocolate Balls. These tasty sweet treats are one of the first recipes a child will learn to bake in Sweden and are easy to find in local patisseries, cafes and grocery stores.
100 grams salted butter (at room temperature)
1 tablespoon vanilla sugar (I swapped this out for 1 tablespoon of regular golden caster sugar)
2-3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
2-3 tablespoons cold strong coffee (you can replace this with cold water if you prefer)
Desiccated coconut (optional)
The most common way to make Chokladbollar is to mix everything by hand in a bowl.
First, add the butter and sugar into your bowl and mix together with your hands until creamy.
Then add the cocoa, oats, and cold coffee (or water) and mix well until combined. It shouldn’t be too sticky at this point – if it is, just add a few more oats!
Roll the mix into 20-30 small balls before rolling in a plate of desiccated coconut and refrigerating for 1-2 hours to firm up.
And there you have it! It’s honestly the most simple dish you could ever make and it is so delicious; I think my family and I demolished them in two days!
When you’ve baked your Chokladbollar, you can have a Fika. Fika is simply the act of having a drink (normally coffee or tea) with something sweet, and taking a break from your daily routine. It’s basically the Swedish version of a cuppa break!
