It’s true what they say; money does make the world go round. And it also gets you round the world.
Although travel can definitely be one of the most expensive things you can do, there are some handy ways you can save up your hard earned pennies for your big trip. From cutting back on eating out, to getting rid of the things I just don’t use anymore, here are some of the ways I save money for travelling.
Keep A Change Jar
Popping all of your loose change into an empty pot or jar can help you save a surprising amount of money. And that’s money you can totally use to buy yourself a souvenir, treat yourself to a delicious meal out, or do that extra activity on your trip of a lifetime.
Dine in More Often
Do you really need to buy your lunch in the supermarket? Do you really need to go out for that meal? Now, whilst some of these are for legitimate reasons (don’t just cancel on your best mate’s birthday meal…), sometimes we just can’t be bothered to cook at home. But if you keep track of how much you spend on food out, it’ll shock you how much you end up spending every week. So prep lunch at home, have a good breakfast, and eat in on an evening.
Set Up a Travel Savings Account
Creating an entirely separate savings account for your travel plans will honestly help you save so much money. You can even set up direct payments to your new savings account which means you’ll automatically save a proportion of your wages directly for your trip.
Sell Your Unwanted Items
It may be time to give your closet a spring cleaning. If you’re going travelling for a good chunk of time, you may need a whole new wardrobe anyway. So why not sell the stuff you’re not going to wear? The same can be said for books, DVDs, bric-a-brac… Get yourself on eBay or to a car boot sale!
A Big Night In
Although going out with your loved ones for a weekend on the town, big family meal, or cinema trip can be fun, there are cheaper alternatives which are just as fun. Why not invite your friends and family over, have a film night, and chip in for a takeaway?
Sign Up For Loyalty Programmes
Whether its for an airline, credit card company, hotel group, or shopping chain, signing up for loyalty programmes can have huge benefits. Saving up your points can equate to discounts and vouchers for travel, meaning you can save your pennies for the things that matter most.
Ask For Money
If you have a birthday coming up or Christmas is just around the corner, why not ask your loved ones for money instead of gifts. Pop the money straight into your savings account and you won’t be tempted to touch it before your big trip arrives.
Long story short? You can save on pretty much everything you do. It’s just finding imaginative ways to do so.
And once you do, you’ll soon be on that plane, jetting off on your adventures.
