Cardiff is without doubt one of my favourite cities in the world. From its vibrant past, to its iconic streets and incredible culture, there is so much to do and see in the Welsh Capital. If you’re heading to the city and need some fun ideas of what to do, here are the top free things to do in Cardiff!
National Museum
Home to the Nation’s best art, culture, and natural history, the National Museum is one of the best free things to do in Cardiff. You can easily spend hours in here exploring everything from fossils to paintings! Occasionally the museum hosts exhibitions and events, and whilst there is a small fee to pay to enter these exhibits, the main museum remains free all year round.
Take a Stroll in the Parks
Take your pick from Bute Park, Sophia Gardens, or Roath Lake and Park! Each park is a beautiful, tranquil spot in the middle of Cardiff, letting you escape from the bustling city and take a step back into nature. In Spring and Summer they make great picnic spots too!

Visit the Senedd
Down at Cardiff Bay lies the Senedd is home to Wales’ National Assembly. If its stunning architecture isn’t enough to draw you in, then perhaps the draw of being able to watch democracy unfold, or taking a tour of the building with one of the many knowledgeable staff members might take your fancy.
The Millennium Centre
Staying down by the Bay is the iconic Millennium Centre, made from Welsh slate, steel, glass and wood to reflect the Nation’s spirit and pride. The Millennium Centre is home to the National Arts Centre of Wales, and often runs public performances including dance shows and contemporary music in its lobby which are free to the public!

St Fagans National Museum of History
Just 20 minutes from Cardiff lies St Fagan’s History Museum which is a perfect spot to visit if you’re spending a few days in the area. The 100-acre open air museum is a national heritage site and also features the beautiful Saint Teilo’s Church along the River Ely.
Take a Free Walking Tour
Walking tours are finally back throughout most of the UK! They’re the perfect way to get your footing in a new place and figure out where you want to go during the rest of your trip! Fogo’s Free Tour is Cardiff’s only free walking tour, running Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at 11am!
Happy exploring!

Nice post about our capital city! I’m from North Wales and have only been down to Cardiff once for a day, and I enjoyed seeing the Senedd and Millennium Centre in person! My mum and I enjoyed strolling through the market in the city centre as well 🙂
